Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment

An Endodontist or Root Canal Surgeon performs root canal or endodontic treatment. It involves the removal of the soft centre of the tooth which is called pulp (comprised of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues) when infected or abscessed. A dental filling is often used to seal the space and avoid reinfection after the root canal procedure.

REASONS FOR A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

  • Decayed tooth due to untreated cavity
  • Cracked or Chipped tooth
  • Sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Swollen gum
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Loose tooth

PROCEDURE

Step 1: Anaesthetic

Before the treatment, the dentist will apply a small dose of numbing medication to your gum near the affected tooth. You might feel a burning sensation for a few seconds.

Step 2: Pulp Removal

After numbing your tooth, the endodontist will create a tiny opening in the tooth surface through the crown to remove the damaged pulp with the help of special tools called files.

Step 3: Oral Antibiotics

After pulp removal, the endodontist will disinfect, clean and shape the canals. He may even inject a medicament into the canals based on the requirement. They may even prescribe you oral antibiotics.

Step 4: Filling

After the procedure, the dentist fills the small incision with soft, temporary material called sealant to prevent saliva from reinfecting the canal.
